It always makes me smile when families are up to creating portraits that show some action and animation. I really believe that this style of portrait communicates love, playfulness, and togetherness. Take this portrait for example. You can’t see the faces of the people, but you know they are having fun and making the most of their time together in paradise. Years from now when the family members view the portrait they will immediately go back to Hawaii and remember all the great times and experiences had as a family. As kids grow and get married this portrait will become one of their favorite family possessions.
This weekend I had the chance to listen, watch, and take photographs of the Maui Suzuki Violin students do their thing at a public fund raising event. It was incredible seeing kids of all ages be excited about music.
The kids played for 90 minutes and the music was like candy to my ears. Seeing the passion and joy in the faces made it worth all the investment of time and money.
I think learning to play music is like learning another language. Good for them!
Learning the violin takes practice and this means less time in front of the T.V.
As I write this post my family is upstairs playing. It is wonderful!
I know the parents of these kids are very proud. I was thinking a the next recital I should photograph them so they can see the joy and pride that shows on their faces.
These are just some of the magical moments of our lives. If there is a special event or family function coming up please call Maui Photography to talk about your families portrait needs.
The wonderful thing about being part of a family is the love and relationships that exist amongst parents and children. True things are not always perfect, and once in a while things can get hard, but the bottom line is that being part of a family means your never alone and part of something bigger than yourself.
The day may come when you find yourself wondering why you care and do so much for family and they don’t seem to appreciate it. If and when this seek out the family photos that are hidden in a closet somewhere. Looking at these portraits created over time will make you smile and bring back all kinds of good memories.

Another fun activity you might want to consider is a family photography workshop. We will come to your hotel and teach the family the basics, how to set up the camera, how to pose, and light family members.

This portrait is titled Mystic Waterfall and it is located on the road to Hana. It is 30 x 60 and printed on aluminum. It will be on display at the Waterfront Restaurant when it re-opens in mid May. I was a waiter there in 1990 and it is an honor to come back as the artist providing the decor. The new location is in the shops at Maalaea Harbor. See more images here
The Shepard kids were visiting Maui, and we were on a beach in Makena making family portraits. Once the main portrait was finished, it was time to relax and let the kids be kids. These kids were unaware of this photograph being being taken thus captured a real candid moment that preserves the joy of youth.
Many of our clients tell us that the highlight of their vacation was the time we spent together on the beach & the portraits we created.
We had the pleasure of photographing a family reunion recently and produced this slide show with the images. http://youtu.be/YjWTGNPXXMI
Coordinating a session with this many people involves a lot of pre planning and communication. We want to make sure the clothes fit the room the portrait will be displayed and that each family gets the size and style of portraits desired. This takes time but its easier to do it it before coming to Maui.
