You dont always have to look at the camera

Looking at the lens and saying “cheese” in order to evoke a smile is not the status quo anymore.  Sure the pictures have their place but families today seem to want something that evokes some emotion and tell a story.

Walking towards the camera and away from the camera are very popular as each evokes a different emotional response.  Portraits like this include an element of interaction and animation & in the process capture each individuals expressions & emotion even if you cant see all the faces.

The wonderful thing about being part of a family is the love and relationships that exist amongst parents and children.   True things are not always perfect, and once in a while things can get hard, but the bottom  line is that being part of a family means your never alone and part of something bigger than yourself.

The day may come when you find yourself wondering why you care and do so much for family and they don’t seem to appreciate it.  If and when this seek out the family photos that are hidden in a closet somewhere.  Looking at these portraits created over time will make you smile and bring back all kinds of good memories.

Summer is just a few weeks away.

Summer vacations are always fun, especially when they are in Maui.  The island has so many fun activities ranging from tours of the island, snorkeling, diving, horseback riding, hang gliding, chilling at the beach, and more.

If you are coming to Maui this summer don’t forget to plan a family portrait.  Children grow and in a blink of the eye are soon graduating high school then college. Take advantage of the wonderful times your together as a family.  Later on you will glad you did.

Another fun activity you might want to consider is a family photography workshop.  We will come to your hotel and teach the family the basics, how to set up the camera, how to pose, and light family members.

Mystic Waterfall

This portrait is titled Mystic Waterfall and it is located on the road to Hana.  It is 30 x 60 and printed on aluminum.  It will be on display at the Waterfront Restaurant when it re-opens in mid May.   I was a waiter there in 1990 and it is an honor to come back as the artist providing the decor.  The new location is in the shops at Maalaea Harbor.    See more images here

Kids will be kids

The Shepard kids were visiting Maui, and we were on a beach in Makena making family portraits.  Once the main portrait was finished, it was time to relax and let the kids be kids. These kids were unaware of this photograph being  being taken thus captured a real candid moment that preserves the joy of youth.

Many of our clients tell us that the highlight of their vacation was the time we spent together on the beach & the portraits we created.

The digital age of photography has taken the world by storm. As a result it has never been easier to take a picture. With most cameras and cell phones all you have to do is turn it on, point it in the direction you want, and press a button. The problem is that by making it so simple, todays consumers are taking a lot of “happy snappies” but they don’t really have an idea of what they are doing or why.

 

At Maui Photography we understand how digital cameras work and have a created a fun a family activity that includes learning a few tips that will improve everyone’s photography. Best of all the activity includes an incredible souvenir from Maui.

Upon being hired to conduct an on location family photography workshop we will come to your hotel or resort and have fun with the entire family. First we will do a bit of talking, then we’ll go about the property making photographs. As lighting conditions change we will use off camera lighting tools like strobes, diffusors, and reflectors to manage the light and make photographs with dimension and texture. Each family member that wants to will get time to create photographs.
