Maui Senior Portrait – Graduation Seasons

Congratulations to all of Class 2012s!  May your achievement will give courage to go thorough your next adventure called LIFE!

Recently, I received a wonderful thank you message from my sweet client, Laura Mayron.  If you do not mind, I would like to share it.  Because, It gave me smile ear to ear.

“I hope you’re doing well and that you had a great birthday! I just wanted to thank you again for the amazing work you’ve done on my graduation invitations. I absolutely love them, and I’m not the only one. You wouldn’t believe the response they’ve gotten! Everybody loves them, and I’m not exaggerating. For example, a classmate posted on my Facebook wall about them (you can go see it!), and another one just messaged me asking about them–she said that everyone is “raving about them,” and they are! I’ve heard from my college counselor that people have been stopping by her office just to see it on her bulletin board because everyone is talking about how beautiful they are! Everyone says that they wishes they had one like it–that the photos and layout are just beautiful, and one teacher of mine said it’s the best one she’s ever seen in all her years of teaching! Your work is absolutely amazing, and while I’m so happy about the positive response, in a way I’m not surprised at all–your work is beautiful! I’ve been telling everyone about you, since of course everyone asks where I got such amazing invitations, and I hope that even more good will come your way! Of course, you are more than welcome to come to graduation–I’d love to have you there if you can make it! Thank you again!”

Working with younger generation adults like Laura always gives me new level of inspiration.  I’m truly happy that I could come across to her life as photographer.  Capturing one’s developmental stage such as this senior portrait of Laura is a gift to me.  Thank you Laura!

Maui Photography Tip – Planning before the session is key to success

Every week the phone rings with a potential client interested in having portraits created while on vacation in Hawaii. According to many of our clients,  families are too busy with their routine at home, making vacation an ideal time to organize a family portrait.

Knowing when to have portraits created is very important but so is knowing what your going to do with the images created.  Will the portraits be going in your home, given away as gifts to loved ones.

Technology has made it possible to offer wall portraits on canvas, gift prints on kodak paper, produce one of a kind coffee table books, painted portraits on canvas then embellished with acrylics, images boxes, etc. Some portrait artists are selling collections of wall portraits so that clients can design their interior space using multiple portraits in a variety of designs. Every week the phone rings with a potential client interested in having portraits created while on vacation in Hawaii. Waiting until after the images are created to decide what to do is a recipe for disaster and stress. Imagine viewing dozens of images of your family that are all good and then wondering what to do with them. Without an established goal its quite possible to be overcome, and frustrated. However, with established goals in place its easier to view and select images from the session.

Establishing priorities is part of a process we call portrait planning and this is best done long before the session ever begins. I know it sounds funny, but the thinking about size and medium of print should take place in the planning stage not the selection stage. The projection should just be about selecting the best image, not about price

Maui Photography launches new business Maui Photo Tours

Over the last few years we have noticed that almost every family coming to Maui has a digital camera. Technology has made it simple to point and shoot and take pictures.  Having said that a lot of people do not know what the settings on their cameras do let alone understand basic rules of composition.

So we decided to help people learn about their cameras while having fun in Maui, and recently started a new division called Maui Photo Tours.

Were offering 1/2 and full day scenic tours and workshops around the island for individuals, families, and small groups.  We will take people to locations that are good for photography and off the beaten path.  Our instructors will show  the best vantage points, provide tips on composition, and help each participant take better photographs.   At the same time he or she will be creating photographs of the tour in order to make a souvenir music side show as a gift to take home.

Were also offering mini workshops at peoples homes, or resorts.  We will come and give a concise easy to understand talk about photography and answer all your families questions, then go outside and work together to create portraits of the scenery and each other.

Finding the Best Portrait Photographer for your Family

With the holidays approaching, many families are considering having portraits commissioned.  This Maui portraiture guide was written to help consumers find the best photographer for their family.

Sunset portrait at Po'olenalena Beach

There are hundreds of photographers on Maui.  Some are really good while others are very reasonably priced. In order to avoid disappointment it is good to invest some time in planning and decide what is most important to your family.

Do you want portraits that capture the expression and personalities of your family or just snapshots in Hawaii. Are you looking for something to put on the wall over the fireplace or a few gift prints to send to grandma and Grandpa?  The point is the more planning you do before hiring a photographer the happier you will be with the results.

Here are some questions to think about as you plan.

What is the primary reason having a portrait created now?

How many different portraits, family poses or breakdowns do you want?

Do you want formal or casual portraits?

Do you envision portraits with peoples faces looking at camera, looking at baby, looking off camera, looking at each other.  Please explain your vision.

Do you want a portrait that tells the story of living in Hawaii, or do you want portraits that focus more on the people less of the environment.

If you could go anywhere you wanted to make the portrait where would you go?

Will you need duplicates of any images as gifts for family members?

Do you know where in your home the portraits will be displayed? Would the space complement a vertical or horizontal portrait?

What products are you interested in? coffee table books, paintings, collages, canvas portraits, Kodak Prints, discs of images, music slide shows, holiday cards, e.t.c…

Do you have an established budget?

Have you thought about what to wear?

Maui Photo Tours and Workshop – Beach photography tip

When going to the beach to create portraits of people, avoid putting the horizon line in someones head or body. One way to do this is create the photograph from a higher angle of view. Mieko and I bring a step ladder to every session for this very reason.

The heads are below the horizon line making for a more pleasing composition
